Gefährlicher KotKatzen-Parasiten könnten Psychosen auslösen
Kinder, die mit einer Freigängerkatze aufwachsen, haben ein erhöhtes Risiko, im Erwachsenenalter eine Psychose zu erleiden. Dies gilt jedoch nur für Jungen bzw. Männer, wie neue Forschungsergebnisse zeigen. Die Studie wurde im Journal of Psychiatric Research publiziert. 1

Forschende fanden heraus, dass Jungen, die Katzen besaßen, welche im Wesentlichen im Freien lebten, ein nur gering, aber dennoch signifikant erhöhtes Risiko für psychotische Ereignisse im Erwachsenenalter hatten. Dies im Vergleich zu Altersgenossen, die in ihrer Kindheit keine Katze oder eine Hauskatze hatten.
Als Risikofaktor steht allerdings nicht die Katze selbst in Verdacht, sondern auf die Exposition gegenüber Toxoplasma (T.) gondii . Dieser verbreitete Parasit wird von Nagetieren übertragen und ist manchmal im Katzenkot zu finden. Die Studie ergänzt somit die zunehmenden Hinweise darauf, dass eine Exposition gegenüber T. gondii ein Risikofaktor für Schizophrenie und andere psychotische Störungen sein kann.
